DoTerra Road Trip 2011

I first learned about doTERRA Essential Oils from my Mormon friends in Utah while I was with my family on our great American Road Trip of 2011. We were just getting started on our 6,200 mile journey when I bought my Family Physicians Kit. It was great to have it on the road with us. Dan never let me drive even one single mile, so I had lots of time to read and look up how to treat everything we encountered from sunburn to cranky, too tired to go to sleep granddaughter. We swam nearly every day and Sydney became a real mermaid. When she scraped her nose on the bottom of the pool, the first thing she asked for was lavender. She was quick to learn that lavender would also stop the itching of those pesky mosquitoes. Too bad we didn’t yet know about Terra Shield insect repellent.

By the time we made it to our family in Oklahoma I was already thinking about the oil remedy every time someone uttered a complaint about a sore muscle, a blistered toe, a fussy baby, or a hangover headache. I noticed, too, that nearly everyone was complaining about something. The most serious problem I encountered was Sandra’s awful case of poison ivy. She had been suffering for over a month, missed the last two weeks of teaching school because she was too drugged on Benedryl to stay awake. I looked up poison ivy in the A-Z pocket guide, mixed lavender and melaleuca, sprinkled it on her rash. Within moments, her agony vanished. I think that was the first time I got a little mad. I was mad that she had suffered needlessly. There was something that could have been done for her—but why hadn’t anyone known about essential oils? Why didn’t her doctor know? Why didn’t Google know? What else don’t I know that can spare my family needless suffering? I decided to find out.

Since those drastic results with Sandra I have been smearing oils on anyone who mentions an ailment. I hear myself say, “I have an oil for that!” The results continue to amaze me. Just the other day a friend who purchased a Family Physcian’s Kit to get started with oils, found a remedy that eliminated a chronic acid-reflex problem. Imagine, just a couple of drops of lemon oil in a glass of water, restored sanity to her digestive tract.

Terra Shield—My New Best Friend

I love it! IT REALLY WORKS! (This is me screaming at the top of my lungs and jumping for joy!) I wish I could kiss the genius that created this amazing blend of essential oils. It might seem weird to you that someone could get so worked up about insect repellent, but, you see—I hate mosquitoes! Of course, the bites are annoying, but the real torture is the way they dive bomb my head, bullying me before they strike. The constant buzzing drives me crazy! Not anymore! Terra Shield to the rescue.
My dread of mosquitoes almost kept me from going to my friend, Linda’s house the other evening for a glass of wine around the fire. On my way out the door I thought about the new oil that had just arrived in the mail, Terra Shield. I put a few drops on my exposed skin, tucked the bottle in the pouch of my sweatshirt and headed outdoors to be a human guinea pig. When I arrived the “stump stove” (see the picture above) was just getting started, but the mosquitoes were in full attack mode. Before I even sat down Jen offered me some OFF Deep Woods. The first time I saw this chart I felt like I had discovered a secret that someone didn’t want me to know. For me this is not just about saving money by not buying all of these OTC drugs, but finding a solution for storing the medicines my family might need in emergency situations. Because the oils remain potent indefinitely, they don’t expire and become “deadly toxic” like the drug manufacturers lead you to believe happens to their products.

The chart below shows just some of the over-the-counter medicines that each of these basic essential oils replace. I find it fascinating.

Finally, if these oils really work I could create a stash of oils and have peace of mind knowing that I was prepared to care for my family is a time of medical distress now and in the future. My quest now was to find out if indeed the oils really work. Can a few drops of Lavender really calm a crying baby, stop a cold in its tracks, kill bacteria and viruses, disinfect my counter-tops, reduce high blood pressure, treat insect bites and bee stings, soothe sunburns, lift depression, relieve headaches, not to mention active my pineal gland?

Essential Oils in the Vanderbilt Emergency Room

One way to use essential oils is aromatically with a diffuser. I was surprised to learn that just breathing in the oils gives the healing molecules direct passage through your lungs, into your nervous system. (This is my “non-medical” way of explaining how it works.)

Gifts of the Earth—Essential Oils

I am blown away by what I didn’t know about essential oils. For example, I didn’t know that 2 drops of peppermint oil can bring a baby’s temperature down in 15 minutes. Lavender and melaleuca oils can cure an ear infection in 1 day for only 64 cents versus a trip to the doctor for prescription antibiotics that take a week to do their job. How is it possible that I didn’t know essential oils not only are antibiotic, but they are also anti-viral? When the doctor says, tells me my flu symptoms are viral and there is nothing he can prescribe, I wonder how is it possible he doesn’t know about the anti-viral properties of therapeutic grade lavender, lemon, and melaleuca?
The powerful essential oil of oregano is anti-fungal and can remove warts and moles and cure athlete’s foot. You smell a little like spaghetti, but it’s worth it. Lemon essential oil is anti-cancer, anti-depressant, anti-septic, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-viral, and astringent. Allergies are no match for Lavender and Eucalyptus oils.
My sister-in-law thinks I am a witch the way my oil potion tamed her month-long, raging case of poison ivy. She was nearly in tears claiming she would have given a million dollars for that tiny bottle a month ago. She had used every pill and salve on the market to no avail.
Heartburn, high blood pressure, hives, hot flashes, headaches—nature delivers the healing frequency in the tiny molecules of essential oils. Snake bites, sore throat, sprains, staph infection, stomachache and stretch marks all can be treated with an essential oil protocol.
I didn’t know that a heavenly spelling oil named Frankincense can fade those annoying brown spots on my 50 year old face. Lavendar and Melaluca can stop the itch of a mosquito bite and Eucalyptus plus Lemon makes a great insect repellant.
The research is as old as the Pharoahs of Egypt and currently ongoing in major universities and hospitals around the world. Recent studies show that essential oils have sesquiterpenes that allow them to cross the blood-brain barrier delivering oxygen molecules to the brain cells. This makes them helpful with stroke recovery closed head injuries and brain disorders, Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Essential oils are more than just perfume—they are strong medicine. Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson and all the big drug companies spend endless amounts of money in the laboratory trying to synthesize the precious ingredients in essential oils. If they can synthesize it in the lab they can patent it, and sell it to us. But they can’t patent nature and their efforts fall short because of the infinite complexity of nature’s compounds.
I am learning that just like all computers are endeavoring to replicate the human brain, all of the over the counter medications and prescription drugs are attempts to replicate nature. Essential oils truly are gifts of the earth. Unlike synthetic medications they never expire and remain potent indefinitely. They have no side-effects.
I hate to admit it, but I guess I didn’t know about essential oils because big corporations don’t advertise them in 60 second commercials day and night on TV. No one is paying movie stars to endorse essential oils. I guess if the word is going to get out about the powerful natural medicine in therapeutic grade essential oils, it is up to me and you.
